Rankings look fine but clicks have dropped? Google AI Overviews may be answering for you. Here is how to get cited in them and turn the answer into a visit.

Short answer: AI Overviews answer simple questions at the top of Google, so fewer people click through for basic facts. You win the clicks back by being one of the cited sources, by targeting questions that need a decision rather than a definition, and by making your brand memorable enough that people search for you by name.
Many business owners noticed something strange this year. Search Console says they still rank, but clicks are down. Often the reason is a box at the top of Google that answers the question before anyone scrolls. That box is the AI Overview.
Which searches lose the most clicks?
Quick-fact searches: "what is SEO", "how many calories in a hopper", "what does GBP stand for". Google answers these itself. If your traffic came from definitions, you will feel it most.
Searches that lead to a decision still send clicks: "best family lawyer in Colombo", "AC repair price per unit", "wedding photographer packages Kandy". People want to compare and contact, and that means visiting a site.
How do you become a cited source?
Google cites pages that answer the question clearly and that it already trusts.
- Put a direct two-sentence answer at the top of the page, like the one above.
- Use question headings that match how people ask.
- Include specifics: prices, steps, timeframes, locations.
- Keep the page up to date and show the updated date.
- Make sure the page is indexed and loads fast on a phone.
Why does being cited help even without a click?
Your name appears in the answer. People remember it, and many search for you by name later or ask for you on WhatsApp. Treat AI Overviews like a billboard on the busiest road in town. Being on it builds memory even when nobody stops right away.
What should you change in your content plan?
Spend less effort on generic definitions and more on content that helps people decide: price guides, comparisons, "how to choose" articles, local pages, and real case studies. These are harder for an overview to replace, and they bring visitors who are ready to act.
How do you measure what is happening?
In Search Console, compare impressions with clicks for your key pages. If impressions are steady but clicks fell, an overview is likely answering. Also track branded searches, calls and direct visits. A rise in people searching your name is a sign the citations are working.
