Short answer: judge SEO by enquiries, not traffic. The six numbers that matter are enquiries from search, conversion rate of your key pages, impressions for buying searches, Google Business Profile actions, branded searches, and revenue from search customers. Traffic and rankings are early signs, not results.
Many SEO reports are 20 pages of graphs that all go up. Then you ask your sales team, "Are we getting more enquiries from Google?" and nobody knows. Here is how to measure SEO in a way you can actually use.
1. How many enquiries came from search?
Count calls, WhatsApp messages and form submissions from Google search and your Google Business Profile. Track button clicks in Google Analytics, check the profile's performance report, and ask every new customer how they found you. This is your main number.
2. What percentage of visitors to key pages enquire?
If 200 people visit your "AC repair Colombo" page and 6 contact you, that is 3%. If traffic doubles but this rate halves, you are attracting the wrong people. If the rate goes up, your page is getting better.
3. Are you being seen for buying searches?
In Search Console, look at impressions for searches that include a service plus an area, a price, or words like "best", "near me" and "cost". Rising impressions here mean you are getting in front of buyers, even before clicks follow.
4. What do people do on your Google Business Profile?
Calls, website clicks, direction requests and messages. For local businesses this is often a bigger source of customers than the website itself.
5. Are more people searching your name?
Branded searches grow when people hear about you, see you in AI answers, or remember you from earlier visits. It is one of the clearest signs that your visibility is building.
6. How much revenue came from search customers?
You do not need perfect tracking. Tag customers by source in your sales sheet or CRM, and once a quarter add up what they spent. This is the number that tells you whether SEO is worth the money.
Which numbers can you ignore?
Total traffic on its own, bounce rate, and the number of keywords you "rank for". They can move a lot without changing your income.
What should a good monthly report look like?
One page: enquiries from search, what work was done, what changed, and what is next. If your current report does not show enquiries, ask for it. See how we report on our results page, or request a free growth audit to set up proper tracking.
