How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Begging or Breaking the Rules)
Happy customers rarely leave reviews unless you ask well. Here is when to ask, what to send, how to reply, and what Google does not allow.

Short answer: ask every customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a direct review link sent by WhatsApp or SMS. Make it one tap, mention what to write about, and reply to every review. Never pay or give discounts for reviews. That breaks Google's rules and can get reviews removed.
Most happy customers are willing to leave a review. They just forget, or it feels like effort. Meanwhile, the one unhappy customer always finds the time. A simple, steady system fixes that imbalance.
When is the best moment to ask?
Right after the good moment: when the car is handed back running smoothly, when the client sees the finished photos, when the patient leaves feeling better. Satisfaction fades within days. Ask the same day if you can.
How should you ask?
Keep it personal and short. For example, by WhatsApp:
"Hi Nadeesha, thank you for choosing us for your kitchen tiles. If you're happy with the work, would you mind leaving a quick Google review? It really helps a small business like ours: [link]"
Use your direct review link from your Google Business Profile so the review box opens straight away.
How do you get more detailed reviews?
Detailed reviews help both customers and Google. You can gently suggest what to mention: "It would help if you mentioned which service you used." Reviews that say "fixed our AC in Nugegoda the same day" are worth far more than "good service".
Where else can you ask?
- A QR code at the counter or on the receipt.
- A line in your email signature and invoices.
- A follow-up message a few days after delivery.
- A small card in the product packaging.
How should you reply to reviews?
Reply to all of them. For good ones, thank the person by name and mention the service. For bad ones, stay calm, apologise for the experience, explain briefly, and invite them to talk privately. Never argue in public.
What should you avoid?
- Offering discounts, gifts or entries into draws for reviews.
- Writing reviews for yourself or asking staff and family to.
- Only sending the link to customers you think are happy.
- Buying reviews from anyone.
These can get reviews deleted and your profile suspended.
How many reviews do you need?
There is no magic number. Aim to have more recent reviews than the businesses you compete with in the map. A steady few each week beats a burst once a year.
