how customers choose local business

How Customers Pick a Local Business on Their Phone in Under 60 Seconds

On a phone, customers decide fast: stars, photos, distance, a quick look at your site, then call. Here is what they check in those seconds, and how to win them.

Short answer: on a phone, people choose a local business in a few quick steps: they scan the map results for stars, reviews, distance and "open now", glance at photos, maybe tap into one website for a few seconds, and then call or message. To win, you need strong reviews, real photos, correct hours, and a mobile page that shows what you do and a call button straight away.

Picture someone in Colombo with a flat tyre, or a parent looking for a paediatrician at 7pm. They are not reading. They are scanning, comparing three options, and deciding fast. Every second of friction sends them to the next result.

What happens in the first 10 seconds?

They see the map and three listings. In a glance they compare:

  • Star rating and number of reviews. 4.7 from 180 reviews beats 5.0 from 4.
  • Distance. Closer usually wins, if everything else is equal.
  • Open now. If your hours are wrong or missing, you are skipped.
  • The first photo. A real shopfront or team photo builds trust. A logo alone does not.

What happens in the next 20 seconds?

They tap one or two listings. They read the newest reviews, check the photos, and look for a price hint or a sign that you do exactly what they need. Replies from the owner under reviews show that someone cares.

What happens if they visit your website?

They give it a few seconds. On a phone, they need to see at once:

  1. What you do, in plain words.
  2. That you serve their area.
  3. A reason to trust you, such as rating, years or a short review.
  4. A big call or WhatsApp button.

If they have to pinch, zoom, wait for a slow page or hunt for a phone number, they go back and pick someone else.

What makes them finally call?

Feeling sure. That comes from reviews that mention their exact problem, clear prices or a "from" price, and an easy, low-effort way to ask a question, which is why WhatsApp works so well in Sri Lanka.

What can you improve this week?

  • Ask five recent customers for a review.
  • Upload ten real photos to your Google Business Profile.
  • Check your hours, including Poya days.
  • Put a tap-to-call and WhatsApp button at the top of your mobile site.
  • Add your main service and area to the first line of your homepage.
