SEO is dead because of AI.
AI tools still rely heavily on search results and well-ranked pages. SEO is the foundation the others stand on.
SEO gets your pages ranked in search results. AEO gets your words used as the direct answer to a question. GEO gets your business named and cited in answers written by AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. AIO is a broad label for AI-focused work, often meaning Google’s AI Overviews. All four build on the same foundations.

What each term means, where the result appears and what counts as winning.
| Term | What it is | Where it shows | What it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO (search engine optimisation) | Making pages easy for search engines to find, understand and rank in their normal results. | Google and Bing results pages, including Google Maps for local searches. | Rankings, clicks, organic traffic and the enquiries it brings. |
| AEO (answer engine optimisation) | Shaping content so a search engine or assistant can lift it as the direct answer to a question. | Featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes and voice assistants. | How often your page is used as the answer. |
| GEO (generative engine optimisation) | Getting a business named and cited in answers written by AI tools. | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. | Mentions and citations across the questions customers ask, and visits from AI tools. |
| AIO (AI optimisation) | A broad label for all work aimed at AI systems; often used for Google’s AI Overviews in particular. | Mostly Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode; sometimes any AI answer. | Appearances and citations in AI-generated results. |
Each term arrived with a new place where people find answers. SEO came with search engines, AEO with featured snippets and voice assistants, and GEO and AIO with AI tools that write answers. The underlying job has not changed: be the clearest, most trustworthy answer to the questions your customers ask.
The overlap is large. AI tools often read the pages that rank well, answer passages are lifted from well-structured pages, and every one of them rewards consistent facts about the business behind the page.
It depends on where your customers are finding businesses like yours today. A business chosen from Google Maps, such as a restaurant or a clinic, usually gains most from local SEO first. A business researched carefully before purchase, such as a school, a hotel or an agency, gains more from pages that answer questions well, which serves SEO, AEO and GEO together.
What rarely works is buying one in isolation. GEO without a site that ranks, or SEO without consistent facts across the web, leaves the other half of the job undone. That is why our team plans them as one piece of work.

They describe overlapping work. The labels differ more than the methods.
The same pages, facts and structure serve all four. Splitting them usually creates gaps.
