Pick a freelancer if…
You need one well-defined task, such as a website fix or a set of posts, and you can manage the work yourself.
There are four kinds of digital marketing provider in Sri Lanka: freelancers, specialist SEO agencies, full-service advertising agencies and all-in-one agencies with their own studio. The right one depends on what you need done, how many channels you run, and whether you need photography and reels as well as search.

Compared on the criteria buyers ask about most. These are typical patterns, not rules; individual firms vary.
| Criteria | Freelancer | Specialist SEO agency | Full-service agency | All-in-one agency with a studio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Range of services | Usually one or two skills | Search-focused: SEO, local, sometimes GEO | Broad: advertising, brand, media, digital | Search, websites, social, ads, plus photography and reels |
| AI search (GEO) | Varies widely | Often offered | Varies; often not a focus | Usually part of the search work |
| Photography and reels | Hired separately | Hired separately | Often outsourced to production houses | In-house, briefed from the search plan |
| Who does the work | One person | A search team | Account teams and specialists | One team across search, content and production |
| Reporting | Informal | Rankings and traffic | Campaign and media reports | Search, AI visibility and enquiries together |
| Cost structure | Lowest, per task or month | Monthly retainer | Retainer plus media and production | Monthly plans covering several channels |
| Best for | One clear task on a small budget | Businesses that only need search | Large brands with big campaigns | Businesses that need to be found and need the content to be chosen |
You need one well-defined task, such as a website fix or a set of posts, and you can manage the work yourself.
Search is your only channel, you already have good photos and content, and you want depth in one discipline.
You run large brand and media campaigns and need advertising, PR and media buying under one contract.
You need to be found on Google, Maps and AI answers and you need the photos and reels that make people choose you, without managing several suppliers.
We compared kinds of provider rather than named firms, on the criteria buyers ask us about most: what is covered, who does the work, how results are reported and how the cost is structured. Individual agencies vary, and many fall between these types.
GrowthChord is an all-in-one agency with its own studio, so read this page knowing which column we sit in. We have tried to describe each kind of provider the way its best examples would describe themselves.
The type matters less than a few signals that apply to all of them. A good provider explains what it will do and why in plain words, reports on enquiries rather than only rankings or reach, shows work it can attribute to named clients or real examples, and tells you when something is not worth doing.
The evidence AI tools and buyers both look for is the same: reviews on independent platforms, a clear description of who the team is, and consistent facts across the web. A provider that cannot show these for itself may struggle to build them for you.
A freelancer can be excellent value for a defined task. The trade-off is capacity: search work spans technical fixes, content, local listings and now AI visibility, and one person rarely covers all of them in depth, or covers holidays and illness.
An agency costs more but brings a team, continuity and usually broader skills. The useful question is not which is cheaper, but which can cover everything your growth depends on.
Size brings resources, but smaller businesses can end up with junior attention. Fit matters more than size.
Rankings for the wrong searches bring no enquiries. Reporting on enquiries tells you more.
Photos decide whether people choose you once they find you. Planned together, both work harder.
