AI Overviews appear on every search.
They appear on some searches, more often on questions than on simple brand or navigation searches.
Google AI Overviews are short, AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some search results, answering the question directly and linking to a few sources. For businesses they change two things: fewer people click through to websites, and being one of the cited sources becomes a new kind of visibility.

Optimizing for AI Overviews is often called AIO. It sits where SEO and GEO meet.
| Term | What it is | Where it shows | What it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO (search engine optimisation) | Making pages easy for search engines to find, understand and rank in their normal results. | Google and Bing results pages, including Google Maps for local searches. | Rankings, clicks, organic traffic and the enquiries it brings. |
| AEO (answer engine optimisation) | Shaping content so a search engine or assistant can lift it as the direct answer to a question. | Featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes and voice assistants. | How often your page is used as the answer. |
| GEO (generative engine optimisation) | Getting a business named and cited in answers written by AI tools. | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. | Mentions and citations across the questions customers ask, and visits from AI tools. |
| AIO (AI optimisation) | A broad label for all work aimed at AI systems; often used for Google’s AI Overviews in particular. | Mostly Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode; sometimes any AI answer. | Appearances and citations in AI-generated results. |
An AI Overview is written from pages Google already knows and trusts. Google runs searches related to the question, reads the strongest results and writes a summary, linking to some of the pages it drew on. Pages that rank well, answer the question plainly and come from businesses with a clear, consistent identity are the most likely to be cited.
Google’s AI Mode extends the same idea into a conversation, where follow-up questions draw on further searches. In both, the summary is only as good as the sources it can find, which is why clear pages and consistent facts matter.
The main change is fewer clicks. Independent studies have found that people click regular results much less often when an AI Overview appears. Traffic reports can fall even when rankings hold, which is confusing if you only watch clicks.
The second change is a new form of visibility. Being cited inside the overview puts your name at the top of the page. Studies suggest cited brands keep more of their clicks than brands that are not cited, though that may partly reflect stronger brands being cited more often.
For a Sri Lankan business, the practical meaning is that rankings alone no longer tell the whole story. Whether your business is named in the summary, and whether the summary describes you correctly, now matters as much.

Clicks can fall while visibility holds. Measuring whether you are cited, and the enquiries that arrive, gives a truer picture.
There is no application. Google chooses sources from pages it already ranks and trusts.
