AEO is only about voice search.
Voice was one early use. Today the same answer passages feed snippets, “People also ask” and AI answers.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of shaping content so a search engine or assistant can use it as the direct answer to a question: in featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes, voice assistants and AI answers. In digital marketing it means writing pages that answer real questions clearly enough to be quoted.

AEO is the bridge between ranking a page and having its words used as the answer.
| Term | What it is | Where it shows | What it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO (search engine optimisation) | Making pages easy for search engines to find, understand and rank in their normal results. | Google and Bing results pages, including Google Maps for local searches. | Rankings, clicks, organic traffic and the enquiries it brings. |
| AEO (answer engine optimisation) | Shaping content so a search engine or assistant can lift it as the direct answer to a question. | Featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes and voice assistants. | How often your page is used as the answer. |
| GEO (generative engine optimisation) | Getting a business named and cited in answers written by AI tools. | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. | Mentions and citations across the questions customers ask, and visits from AI tools. |
| AIO (AI optimisation) | A broad label for all work aimed at AI systems; often used for Google’s AI Overviews in particular. | Mostly Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode; sometimes any AI answer. | Appearances and citations in AI-generated results. |
Search engines and assistants increasingly answer a question directly instead of only listing pages. To do that, they look for a passage that answers the question cleanly: a sentence or short paragraph that states the answer, close to a heading that matches the question.
Pages that win those spots tend to share a shape. The question is asked in a heading, the answer comes straight after it in plain words, and the detail follows. The page is clearly about the topic, the business behind it is clear, and the facts match what other sources say. Structured data can help machines understand the page, but the words do the work.
AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search. The same habits now feed AI answers, which is why AEO and GEO are often mentioned together.
More searches now end on the results page. When Google shows a direct answer or an AI summary, fewer people click through to any site, so being the source of the answer is often worth more than being the third link below it.
For a Sri Lankan business, the questions are practical: how much something costs, how long it takes, whether a service is available in a town, what the difference is between two options. Businesses that answer those questions plainly on their own pages are the ones whose words get used.

FAQ sections help, but answers work best on the page that owns the topic, where the detail and the business behind it are clear.
Sometimes the answer satisfies the searcher on the page. The value is in being the name they see and remember.
