how to find keywords for my business

How to Find the Keywords Your Customers Actually Search

Guessing keywords wastes months. Find what customers really type at each stage, from first question to ready to buy, and match each search to a page.

Short answer: collect the exact words customers use, sort them by stage (learning, comparing, ready to buy), and give each important search one page that answers it. The best sources are your own customer conversations, Google autocomplete, the People Also Ask box and Search Console.

Most websites are built around how the business talks about itself: "solutions", "services", "products". Customers do not search like that. They type their problem, their area and their budget. A keyword map closes that gap.

Where do you find the real words customers use?

  • Calls and WhatsApp chats: write down the exact questions people ask before they buy.
  • Google autocomplete: type your service and note the suggestions.
  • People Also Ask: the questions Google shows under many searches.
  • Search Console: the searches you already appear for.
  • Your Google Business Profile: the performance report shows searches that found you.
  • Reviews: the words happy customers use to describe you.

Learning: "why is my car AC blowing warm air". They have a problem, not a supplier.

Comparing: "car AC regas cost Sri Lanka", "best car AC repair Colombo reviews". They know the solution and are choosing who.

Ready to buy: "car AC repair near me open now", "[your business name] phone number". They want to act.

How do you match each search to a page?

Put it in a simple sheet with three columns: search, stage, page. If a search has no page, that is a gap. If two pages target the same search, merge them.

How do you write the page once it is mapped?

Use the search, in natural words, in the title and first heading. Answer it in the first two sentences. Then cover the follow-up questions people have at that stage, and give a clear next step: call, WhatsApp or a quote form.

How often should you update the map?

Every few months, check Search Console for new searches you appear for, and add the questions your team keeps hearing.

Questions

What else do people ask about this?

Google autocomplete, the People Also Ask box, Google Search Console, Google Business Profile search terms and Google Keyword Planner are all free. Your own customer calls and WhatsApp chats are the best source of all.

One main search and a few close variations. If two searches need different answers, they need different pages.

A simple list that matches each important search to the page on your site that answers it, so pages do not compete with each other and no important search is left without a page.
