Short answer: ask for a one-page report that shows enquiries by source (calls, WhatsApp, forms), what each paid enquiry cost, Google Maps actions, sales from marketing, the work done this month, and the plan for next month. If you cannot understand it in two minutes, it is not built for you.

Most marketing reports are written for marketers. They are long, full of charts and words like "engagement rate", and they leave the owner with one question unanswered: "Did this bring us customers?" Here is the report that answers it.

Section 1: How many enquiries came in, and from where?

A simple table: calls, WhatsApp chats, form submissions and walk-ins, split by source, such as Google search, Google Maps, Facebook, Instagram, ads, referrals and AI tools. Compare with last month and the same month last year, since many Sri Lankan businesses are seasonal.

Section 2: What did each enquiry cost?

For paid channels, divide the spend by the number of enquiries. This shows which channel gives you customers at a price you can afford. For SEO, divide the monthly fee by the enquiries from search over the last three months.

Section 3: What happened on Google Maps?

From the Google Business Profile report: calls, direction requests, website clicks and new reviews. For local businesses this section often matters most.

Section 4: How much did marketing customers spend?

Ask your team to note the source of each new customer. Once a quarter, add up their sales. This turns the report from "activity" into "return".

Section 5: What was done, and what is next?

A short list of real work: pages written, photos shot, reviews gathered, ads changed. Then three priorities for next month. This keeps everyone accountable.

What should not be in the report?

Pages of social media impressions, long keyword lists and screenshots without explanation. They are fine as an appendix for those who want them, not as the main story.

How do you start if you have no tracking?

Add click tracking on call and WhatsApp buttons, connect Search Console, check your Google Business Profile report, and keep a sheet where staff write down how each enquiry heard about you. Within a month you will have a real baseline.

This is the report we send our own clients. See it on our results page, or book a free growth audit and we will set up your baseline.
