How ChatGPT Searches Behind the Scenes (And How to Show Up)
When you ask ChatGPT one question, it quietly runs several searches. Learn what it looks for and how to cover those hidden searches so your business shows up.

Short answer: when you ask an AI tool a question, it often splits it into several smaller searches, reads the top pages for each, and then writes one answer. This is called query fan-out. To show up, your site needs to answer not just the main question, but the smaller questions hiding behind it.
Ask ChatGPT "What is the best hotel in Ella for a family with young kids?" and it does not search that sentence once. It looks for family rooms in Ella, hotels with pools, distance to the Nine Arch Bridge, reviews from families, and maybe prices. Then it blends what it found.
Why does this matter for your business?
Because the page that wins is rarely the one with the perfect headline. It is the one that answers the most of those hidden questions clearly. A hotel page that says "family rooms sleep four, small pool, 10 minutes to the Nine Arch Bridge, cots on request" covers five fan-out searches in one paragraph.
How do you work out the hidden questions?
Think like your customer at the moment of choosing. Write down everything they need to know before they would pay you:
- What exactly is offered, and what is not?
- How much does it cost, and what affects the price?
- Where is it, and which areas do you serve?
- How long does it take?
- Who is it best for?
- What do other customers say?
- How does it compare with the alternatives?
Each of these is a likely sub-search.
How should you structure your pages?
Give each main question its own heading and a short, direct answer. Put key facts in plain sentences, not only inside images or PDFs. Add an FAQ section for the smaller questions. Link related pages together, so the AI can follow from your service page to your pricing page to your reviews.
Do your other profiles matter too?
Yes. AI tools also search review sites, maps listings and directories. Your Google Business Profile, Facebook page and industry listings should repeat the same key facts, so every sub-search finds the same answer about you.
How do you check your coverage?
Take your top five customer questions and ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Look at which sources they cite. If competitors appear because their pages answer something yours does not, that is your next page or section to write.
