Why AI Gets Your Business Details Wrong (And How to Fix It)

ChatGPT says you close at 5 or still lists your old address? AI repeats what it finds online. Here is how to find the wrong details and make every source agree.

Short answer: AI tools build their answers from what they find about you across the web. If your website, Google profile, Facebook page and old directory listings disagree, the AI may pick the wrong one or skip you entirely. Make every source say exactly the same thing, starting with the ones you control.

A customer messages you: "ChatGPT said you are open on Sundays." You are not. Or Gemini lists the branch you closed two years ago. It feels like the AI made it up, but it usually found that information somewhere online.

Where does AI get your business details from?

From the same places a curious customer would look: your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook and Instagram, review sites, online directories, news articles and old event listings. When these sources agree, the AI is confident. When they clash, it guesses or leaves you out.

How do you find what is wrong?

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity: "What are the opening hours, address and phone number of [your business]?"
  2. Search Google for your phone number and your old address in quotes.
  3. Check the top directories in your industry and for Sri Lanka, plus Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  4. Write down every place that shows something different.

What should be identical everywhere?

  • Business name, written the same way every time.
  • Address, in the same format.
  • Main phone number and WhatsApp number.
  • Opening hours, including holidays.
  • Website address.
  • A one-line description of what you do and where.

Which sources should you fix first?

Start with what you control and what gets read most: your website (especially the contact and about pages), Google Business Profile, Facebook and Instagram. Then fix the big directories. Finally, ask old partners or news sites to update outdated mentions, or publish a fresh, correct mention that outranks them.

How do you help AI read your details correctly?

Add LocalBusiness schema markup to your website with your name, address, phone, hours and social profiles. Keep a clear "About" page that says who you are, when you started and where you work. These give the AI one clean, trusted source.

How long until the answers change?

Tools that search live, like Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, can update within weeks of your sources changing. Answers based on older training data take longer. Keep the sources right and the answers will follow.
